Sanctuary Hosts

We want to rebuild our presence as a church in downtown Calgary by opening the sanctuary and labyrinth for those seeking a quiet space during the week. We’re looking for volunteer hosts who can open the 6th Avenue doors and stay to greet visitors for a couple of hours (schedule TBD). We’re initially targeting Tuesday at lunchtime but would appreciate volunteer hosts any weekday between 10 am and 2 pm. This is an important and rewarding way to engage in the life and work of our church. If you would like to inquire about this project, contact Doug Chandler (dchandler1@shaw.ca) or email the church office (office@kxcalgary.com).

Sunday Ambassador

Living into our value of being an Open Space and Vibrant Place, where Sacred Connections happen, we're looking for volunteers to be a loving presence on Sundays, and to help facilitate a positive worship experience. Being a part of a busy downtown church, with a diverse community coming through our doors; we are looking for a couple volunteers each Sunday, empowered to connect with our vulnerable community members. Further training and resources are available, but previous training and experience with outreach and vulnerable populations is helpful. Sign up through our weekly email or on the sign-up sheet at the Welcome Table, and for more information reach out to Keith kmurray@kxcalgary.com.

Opportunity Knox

The primary role of Opportunity Knox (OK) is to ensure there is an open and transparent process for filling vacant volunteer leadership positions. We strive to provide applicants with knowledge of the position and to match skills and interests with available opportunities. The positions most likely to fall under the OK mandate are those requiring congregational approval, such as Council members, Trustees and leadership positions including Committee/Team Chairs.

Knox is looking for leaders to advance and evolve the mission of the church.

Council Secretary. This person is an active part of the Council and helps keep them organized by taking and keeping minutes and overseeing the official correspondence of the church. On average this position requires a volunteer commitment of approximately 5 hours per month.

Trustee.  Knox Trustees are responsible for holding in trust and managing Knox Church properties and funds related to those properties.  If you have an interest in investments and/or real estate management and would like to be included in a longer-term vision for the sustainability of our historic building, please consider joining this team. The term is 4 years with a time commitment for quarterly meetings and extra time as needs arise. You must also be a member of Knox or willing to become a member.

Knox Foundation Director.  Knox Foundation is looking for leaders who will advance the mission of the Foundation and provide oversight of its assets on behalf of the congregation. Knox Foundation is an independent body that receives, holds and manages endowments and other funds. The Foundation’s purpose is to grow its assets and provide Knox United Church with ongoing funds for the maintenance and capital expenses of the historical building, Casavant organ, and/or the Memorial garden over the long term. Directors meet an average of four times per year in addition to the Annual General Meeting. Term limits vary from one year to three years, but may be renewed. Directors must also be members of Knox United Church at the time of their appointment.

Historic Calgary Week - Hosts Needed

July 29-August 2, 10 am- 2 pm

Every year, the Chinook Country Historical Society sponsors a week of events celebrating Calgary's history. This year, the theme is "Community Builders, and Knox United Church will be one of their featured sites. In addition to hosting a presentation of our role as a community builder, the Knox sanctuary will be open for visitors throughout the week. Opening our sanctuary and labyrinth to the public has been an initiative of ours for over a year. This will be the first time we advertise what we have to offer and promise to be open on specific dates.  If you can commit to helping out as a host for a couple of hours or more during the week of July 29 through August 2 (between 10am and 2pm), please contact the office or speak to Doug Chandler (dchandler@kxcalgary.com) or Kate Reeves.
